A tragic incident unfolded at Ateneo de Zamboanga university campus in Zamboanga, Philippines, as a high school student fatally shot a fellow student before taking his own life. The perpetrator, identified as Grade 9 student Mohammad Mael Jalani, opened fire within the school building, injuring two other individuals. The attack, which was live-streamed on Facebook, marked the second school shooting in the country within two months.
Following the gunshots, the school was swiftly evacuated, and panic ensued among the students. The suspect attempted to shoot a teacher but missed, proceeding to shoot a student on the fourth floor before ending his own life on the fifth floor. Authorities, including Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, indicated that the assailant broadcasted part of the attack on social media, hinting at a potential motive to be investigated through a comprehensive forensic analysis.
Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso confirmed the tragic turn of events, emphasizing that the shooter ultimately took his own life. The school’s high school building, where the incident occurred, is located within a secure campus separate from the university’s main complex. As a precaution, Ateneo suspended classes across all levels in response to the tragedy.
The student’s access to firearms, including a weapon owned by his father, raised concerns about gun safety and the need for stricter regulations. The Bureau of Customs revealed that the suspect obtained one of the pistols from his father, a government official, potentially leading to administrative repercussions for negligence in firearm handling.
While the Philippines grapples with a prevalence of gun-related crimes attributed to unlicensed firearms, school shootings remain infrequent. Despite previous assurances of enhanced security measures following a prior school shooting in Tacloban city, where three students were killed, this tragic incident underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring school safety nationwide.
