Russia launched a relentless aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and its vicinity using numerous missiles and drones overnight. The assault, which lasted for hours, resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, as stated by officials on Thursday.
In recent months, Moscow has escalated its ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed for more Patriot interceptors from other countries, but global stockpiles are depleted due to ongoing conflicts and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s invasion.
The nighttime barrage by Russia also included cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding pressure on Ukrainian air defenses, according to the Ukrainian air force. Explosions reverberated throughout the city, with Kyiv being the main target, although impacts were reported at 28 locations across the country. Zelenskyy confirmed around 40 injuries, with air raid alerts remaining in effect until dawn.
Describing the attack as massive, Zelenskyy took to social media, accusing Russia of meticulously planning the assault by combining various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
Additionally, Russia claimed that the strike targeted a Kyiv industrial site responsible for producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles. The assault also hit sites involved in drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center, as per the Russian Defense Ministry.
As the attack unfolded, Poland activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance. Polish and other NATO military aircraft were deployed to monitor the airspace, while Romania reported an unauthorized drone crashing near its border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia for endangering NATO and its neighboring states by violating sovereignty and escalating the risks of its conflict far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Meanwhile, Ukraine faces challenges in acquiring missile defense systems, with the U.S. Patriot inventory declining significantly. Efforts to bridge the gap are ongoing, with Lockheed Martin increasing interceptor production capacity to meet future demands.
Residential areas in Kyiv were severely impacted by the overnight strikes, with multiple districts experiencing damage to buildings, medical facilities, and educational institutions. Emergency teams rescued trapped individuals and provided assistance to those affected by the attacks.
In response to Russian aggression, Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian infrastructure through long-range drone strikes. Russia claims to have shot down numerous Ukrainian drones in various regions, including Crimea and surrounding seas, during one of Ukraine’s most extensive aerial assaults of the conflict.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to involve drone and missile exchanges, with both sides struggling to gain a significant advantage along the extensive front line.
