The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL by enduring the longest losing streak in modern history. Their 15th consecutive defeat came at the hands of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, marking a disappointing stretch dating back to last season. Surpassing the Shreveport Pirates’ 14-game losing streak in 1994, the Redblacks now hold the ignominious distinction, as confirmed by CFL historian Steve Daniel.
The team’s unprecedented losing streak has disappointed fans like Jimmy Fata, a dedicated Redblacks supporter who expressed uncertainty about the root cause of the ongoing struggles. Fata, known for his involvement in the team’s touchdown celebration tradition of cutting wood cookies, lamented the lack of recent successes in the ritual.
In addition to the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks’ losing streak ranks as the third-longest in CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot. However, the all-time record remains with two Ottawa CFL clubs that collectively lost 25 consecutive games between 1928 and 1932.
Reflecting on the team’s current challenges, Daniel emphasized the need for a continued roster rebuild, particularly on defense. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie made significant player changes after the eighth loss, showing signs of improvement in the team’s recent performance. Despite the hardships, Fata stressed the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, likening it to raising a child and expressing optimism for a turnaround in fortunes.
