A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the community. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) has mentioned that it is premature to ascertain if this incident will impact the project’s timeline.
The fire broke out near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday evening. Chantal Pelletier, the senior administrative officer of Naujaat, confirmed that the community’s fire department promptly responded to the emergency.
The NHC stated that the construction materials were initially allocated for an eight-unit public housing initiative. At present, officials are awaiting the fire chief’s detailed report and collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the destruction.
The completion target for the eight-plex is set for June 2027. However, the NHC spokesperson emphasized that it is premature to speculate on how the fire may impact this deadline.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson mentioned via email that there is no information available for disclosure at this time or any confirmation on whether an investigation is underway.
