Parks Canada confirmed the euthanization of a coyote in the MacIntosh Brook area within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The coyote was put down after exhibiting behavior suggesting a loss of natural fear towards humans. However, it remains uncertain if this is the same coyote responsible for the recent visitor bite incident.
During the encounter, a camper at MacIntosh Brook encountered an aggressive coyote, resulting in bite wounds to their leg as they sought shelter. The individual sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment following the incident.
Areas including MacIntosh Brook, Lone Shieling, and nearby look-offs have been closed since the incident. Parks Canada staff are actively monitoring the area for potential food attractants and will be enhancing signage to alert visitors to potential wildlife encounters.
Parks Canada has not specified a reopening timeline for the affected park areas but assured updates will be provided accordingly. Visitors are urged to adhere to all closures and signage, refrain from feeding wildlife, and promptly report any concerning wildlife behavior to park staff.
