Kelsey Mitchell’s stellar performance of 29 points led the Indiana Fever to a hard-fought 101-95 victory against the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday. Caitlin Clark, a standout player, contributed 24 points and seven assists to Indiana’s fifth consecutive win, with numerous Scotiabank Arena spectators sporting Clark jerseys.
Brittney Sykes marked her return to the Tempo lineup with 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds after a two-month absence due to injury. Despite Marina Mabrey’s impressive 22 points for Toronto, the team suffered its 11th consecutive loss. Aneesah Morrow, a reserve player, set a new franchise record with a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Sykes had been sidelined by a left plantar fascia injury sustained in a game against the Fever in mid-June, during which Toronto endured a 10-game losing streak without her presence. The Tempo, previously in contention for a playoff berth, now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, surpassing only the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, both of whom are already out of playoff contention.
In terms of performance highlights, the Fever, known for their high-scoring abilities, showcased their prowess by living up to their season average of 96.2 points per game. Indiana excelled in three-point shooting, converting 44% of attempts, and dominated the paint with 50 points.
Despite trailing throughout the game by as much as 17 points, Toronto displayed some positive aspects in their play. The Tempo secured 22 second-chance points compared to the Fever’s nine, outrebounded Indiana 41-32, and their bench players contributed 38 points versus Indiana’s 20.
A critical moment in the game occurred when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the final seconds with Toronto trailing by four, but the shot was disallowed by officials due to a palming violation. The Tempo struggled offensively, shooting 39.1% from the field and 32.4% from three-point range.
Looking ahead, the Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Tempo will take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
