The deadline for individuals to officially declare their candidacy for the upcoming municipal election in Ontario is quickly approaching. As of now, candidates have until 2 p.m. ET on August 21 to submit their names for mayor, councillor, or school board trustee positions for the election scheduled for October 26.
In Hamilton, the current situation indicates that unless there are changes within the next four days, Ward 5 and more than half of the school board trustee positions will be uncontested. Notably, Ward 5 stands out as the only ward with a single registered candidate – the incumbent Coun. Matt Francis, who initially won the seat in 2022.
In both the public and Catholic school boards, over half of the available seats have only one candidate registered. Specifically, in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), wards 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 14, and 15 have solo candidates, with several of them being current trustees. Similarly, at the Catholic board, five out of nine seats have lone candidates, including representatives for Wards 1, 2, and 15, among others.
For an overview of the current list of registered candidates for the municipal election in Hamilton, CBC Hamilton has compiled a comprehensive list. Additionally, August 21 marks the final day for candidates to make any changes to their candidacy, including withdrawing from the race.
Several candidates have already opted to withdraw, such as current Ward 10 Coun. Jeff Beattie. Beattie has decided to pull out of the municipal election to instead run as a candidate for the Progressive Conservatives in the upcoming Hamilton East—Stoney Creek provincial byelection on September 3.
