Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has made a $300,000 contribution to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library upon learning about the imminent closure of five branches. Reid expressed her motivation for the donation, emphasizing the importance of utilizing success for positive impact during an interview with CBC News.
Earlier, the Annapolis Valley Regional Library had decided to allocate $80,000 from its reserve funds to keep the five branches open until September 30. To secure the continued operation of these branches until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year, the library board had requested additional funding from municipalities. While a portion of the required amount was secured, an excess of $200,000 still needed to be covered.
In a Radio-Canada interview, library CEO Julia Merritt acknowledged the significance of Reid’s donation, which ensures the ongoing operation of the five branches until the specified fiscal year. Merritt stressed the importance of addressing funding challenges despite the immediate relief provided by the donation.
The donated funds will primarily support staffing costs for the branches, as indicated in a library news release. Merritt expressed profound gratitude for Reid’s generous contribution, highlighting the positive impact it will have on library services in the Annapolis Valley.
Reid, known for her popular “Heated Rivalry” series, credited libraries as essential services that played a pivotal role in her journey to becoming a successful author. She emphasized the broader community benefits libraries offer beyond access to reading materials. Reid hopes her donation will raise awareness about the funding needs of public libraries and encourages continued support for these vital community resources.
Looking ahead, the Annapolis Valley Regional Library is committed to collaborating with government entities to ensure sustainable funding models for public libraries in Nova Scotia. The province’s Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage praised Reid’s donation, acknowledging the importance of public support for local libraries.
Furthermore, Reid is set to participate in a special public event celebrating libraries, reading, and community next month. The library board affirmed its dedication to sustaining vibrant library services across the region, emphasizing the collective effort required to uphold these valuable community assets.
