A video released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) depicting men shackled and boarding a deportation flight to Haiti has caused outrage. Critics accuse Washington of instilling fear in Haitian communities as deportations to the violence-ridden country increase.
The footage, shared on the X social media platform, shows Black men escorted onto a plane with their hands and feet restrained by chains. The post accompanying the video announced the termination of Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and warned individuals to leave immediately or face deportation.
TPS is a U.S. program that shields foreign nationals from deportation when conditions in their home countries are deemed hazardous. Despite concerns about gang violence and instability in Haiti, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to proceed with ending TPS for Haitians, affecting over 300,000 individuals living in the U.S.
Criticism of the DHS video has been widespread, with the Florida Democratic Party denouncing the deportation of Haitian families back to a volatile nation. Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari also condemned the actions of the Trump administration.
The situation in Haiti remains dire, with escalating gang violence following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse. The UN reports that about 1.5 million Haitians are internally displaced due to gang-related violence, with a significant number of casualties and kidnappings in recent months.
The New York Times reported the U.S. government’s plan to increase deportation flights to Haiti following the TPS termination. However, details about the flights and potential acceleration of removals were not disclosed by the Department of Homeland Security for operational security reasons.
Despite the temporary nature of TPS, concerns persist about the impact on affected individuals, including children born in the U.S. and families torn apart by deportations. Organizations like the Haitian Bridge Alliance continue to support Haitian immigrants facing deportation, highlighting the widespread fear and distress within affected communities.
