Canada’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifiers without some key players. The team roster for the Americas qualifiers was revealed by Canada Basketball general manager Rowan Barrett, featuring standout players such as Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort from the Atlanta Hawks. Additional players joining the squad include Trae Bell-Haynes, Khem Birch, Marcus Carr, Mfiondu Kabengele, and others.
The team will face Panama in Panama City and then host Argentina in Quebec City. Notably, Toronto Raptors’ RJ Barrett and Bennedict Mathurin from the Los Angeles Clippers will serve as team ambassadors but will not participate in the games.
Despite initial plans to include Shaedon Sharpe, the Portland Trail Blazers guard sustained a meniscus injury and will be sidelined for six months. Notably absent from the upcoming qualifiers are NBA stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks, with Barrett citing various reasons such as injuries, fatigue, contract issues, and training camp commitments affecting player availability.
Canada Basketball emphasizes the need for a versatile roster, balancing inside and outside players with FIBA experience. Barrett highlighted the importance of player execution and toughness for the upcoming matches. Alexander-Walker, coming off a stellar season, was named the NBA’s most improved player, showcasing significant growth in his game.
Veteran forward Kelly Olynyk brings valuable experience to the team, having reached the NBA finals with the San Antonio Spurs last season. Olynyk’s dedication to the sport and leadership qualities are expected to benefit the team during the qualifiers.
With Canada currently ranked fifth globally and leading Group F with a 6-0 record, the team aims to secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup. As the competition intensifies, the team management continues to navigate player availability challenges, drawing from a pool of over 50 committed athletes for optimal team composition.
