Actor and disability rights activist RJ Mitte, known for his portrayal of a character with cerebral palsy on the acclaimed series “Breaking Bad,” passed away at the age of 34 on Monday, according to authorities and his representatives. Mitte was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. at his presumed residence in Brownsville, Texas, by Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa.
The cause of Mitte’s death has not been disclosed, and an autopsy is scheduled. Mitte’s role as Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character in “Breaking Bad,” spanned all five seasons of the show, which was recently voted the best of the 21st century in a poll by The New York Times.
Having been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three, Mitte shared in a 2014 interview with The Associated Press that his personal experiences with disability, physical therapy, family challenges, and overwhelming medical expenses, which mirrored themes in the show, enhanced his acting abilities.
Mitte, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, began his acting career in Los Angeles in 2006, securing minor roles in sitcoms before landing his breakthrough role on “Breaking Bad” in 2007 at a young age. His representatives highlighted his commitment to raising awareness about disabilities and promoting inclusivity.
Bryan Cranston, Mitte’s co-star on “Breaking Bad,” reminisced about Mitte’s talent and positive energy in a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing his admiration for the late actor’s dedication to the role. Mitte’s acting credits extended to TV series like “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice,” as well as producing independent films.
Beyond his acting career, Mitte was actively involved in advocacy work, serving as a goodwill ambassador for organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and founding the Mitte Foundation to support charitable causes and community projects related to disabilities.
