A grower from Ontario, Jeff Warner, experienced disappointment after his 1,711-pound pumpkin was disqualified from the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest weigh-off due to a soft spot. Despite knowing the strict entry rules, Warner decided to participate in the competition anyway. He attempted to salvage the pumpkin by scraping away the soft spot but was unsuccessful as the hole continued to expand during his journey to the festival. Upon arrival, a judge confirmed that the pumpkin did not meet the qualifying standards, which required the hole to be no larger than three inches wide.
Warner, who had devoted countless hours caring for his giant pumpkin, accepted the ruling with understanding. The winning pumpkin at the festival weighed 1,542 pounds, nearly 170 pounds less than Warner’s impressive entry. Despite the setback, Warner remains proud of his gardening efforts and the attention his giant pumpkin has garnered from visitors.
Looking ahead, Warner intends to transport the pumpkin to a polar habitat where it will be used as food for polar bears. This decision marks a unique conclusion to his journey with the giant gourd.
