Russian airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and injuries to several others in Kyiv and its neighboring areas early on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in 2022, has seen an increase in air assaults by Russia in recent months due to its sluggish progress on the battlefield.
Kyiv and its vicinity have been under siege by swarms of advanced drones over the past five days, causing casualties, property damage, and disruptions to daily life. These modern drones, equipped with jet engines, have proven challenging to intercept, leading to constant air-raid alerts and widespread disruption.
The situation escalated further on Tuesday morning with additional explosions reported in the capital. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted that Russian drones and ballistic missiles targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure during the intense overnight bombardments. He urged Ukraine’s allies to intensify economic sanctions against Russia and explore utilizing Russia’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.
The attacks in Kyiv claimed the lives of eight individuals, primarily railway workers, with more injuries reported following a daytime drone strike that ignited a fire in a high-rise apartment building, as confirmed by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Additionally, a separate assault in Boryspil resulted in four fatalities and 13 injuries, including an Indian citizen, according to Governor Tymur Tkachenko’s Telegram announcement.
The relentless bombings have impacted various regions, including the Black Sea area of Odesa, where a border crossing with NATO-member Romania was targeted, leaving numerous families without power, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Amid the escalating violence, both Russia and Ukraine have engaged in reciprocal attacks, with Ukraine focusing on Russian oil refineries and logistic infrastructure sites.
The conflict has also spilled over into neighboring territories, as evidenced by a drone incursion into Estonian airspace during a Ukrainian strike against Russia, emphasizing the importance of supporting Ukraine with air defense capabilities, as highlighted by Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur. The Russian Defence Ministry reported hitting military and energy targets in Kyiv, Odesa, and their surrounding regions in overnight operations.
Despite efforts to broker peace talks, progress has been hindered by Ukraine’s reluctance to meet Russian territorial demands, compounded by the United States’ heightened focus on its conflict with Iran. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy recently disclosed a productive discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, aiming to finalize plans for a visit to Ukraine.
