Meghan Markle’s father has been admitted to the intensive care unit for an emergency surgery, as disclosed by his son. Thomas Markle, aged 81, was hospitalized in the Philippines on Tuesday after falling seriously ill at his residence. Following a three-hour operation on Thursday, conducted locally, he is currently under intensive care, as confirmed by his son Thomas Jr. The 81-year-old is scheduled for another procedure to address a blood clot issue, added Thomas Jr.
The relationship between Thomas Sr. and Meghan deteriorated in 2018 after her marriage to Prince Harry, leading to estrangement. Thomas Jr., in an interview with the Daily Mail, recounted rushing his father to a nearby hospital in the Philippines where medical professionals expressed concerns about his critical condition based on various scans. Subsequently, they were rushed by ambulance, with sirens blaring, to a larger hospital in the city center where emergency surgery was performed on Thomas Sr.
In a heartfelt appeal, Thomas Jr. urged people worldwide to keep Meghan’s father in their thoughts during this challenging health ordeal. Thomas Sr. has faced numerous health struggles over the years, including two heart attacks before Meghan’s wedding in 2018 and a significant stroke in 2022 that affected his ability to communicate for months. Samantha, Thomas Sr.’s other daughter, expressed her concerns about his deteriorating health, attributing it to the pressures he has faced in recent years.
Living in a modest high-rise apartment on the island of Cebu, over 7,000 miles away from Meghan and Harry in Los Angeles, Thomas Sr. has yet to meet his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet. Thomas Jr., his middle child and a regional Emmy award recipient, has been providing care and support for his father amidst his ongoing health challenges. Despite the health setbacks, Thomas Jr. relocated to the densely populated tropical island earlier this year, where residents often contend with extreme temperatures.
In January, Meghan’s father shared his reasons for moving from California to South East Asia, citing the kindness, respect, and cultural richness of the region. At 80 years old, he sought a tranquil and welcoming environment where he could lead a peaceful and fulfilling life. Emphasizing the quality of medical care, affordability, respect for elders, and healthy cuisine in South East Asia, he expressed a desire for a serene existence in his later years.
