A tragic accident claimed the lives of a young Italian couple shortly after the woman’s 20th birthday celebration. Chiara Garofalo, 20, and Antonio Graziadio, 20, were fatally injured in a collision that occurred on Sunday in Cassano allo Ionio, a town in southern Italy. The incident involved their Fiat Panda colliding head-on with an Alfa Romeo Mito on the Jonica state road around 3:30 am. Two other individuals, aged 16 and 18, who were passengers in the Fiat Panda, sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Despite efforts by emergency medical teams to revive Chiara and Antonio, they were pronounced dead at the scene. Chiara assisted her family in running a bakery, while Antonio was employed as an electrician, as reported by Italian media sources.
The local mayor, Gianpaolo Iacobini, expressed the community’s deep sorrow over the untimely loss of the young couple, stating, “It is difficult to articulate and even more challenging to comprehend. Once again, Cassano mourns its young residents who were taken from us too soon. Our thoughts are with Chiara and Antonio’s families, and we pray for the recovery of the two other injured youths.”
Authorities from Castrovillari have initiated an investigation into the incident and are considering whether to conduct an autopsy.
