The brave couple who perished while attempting to thwart one of the Bondi Beach assailants have been named. Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia, 61, lost their lives while confronting Sajid Akram, 50, during a shooting incident at a Hanukkah gathering on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The Gurmans, who were of Jewish descent, were the initial casualties in the tragic event, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. Married for 34 years, the couple valiantly intervened to shield others before being fatally shot, according to their family’s statement.
Video footage captured Mr. Gurman, a retired individual, grappling with the attacker before both individuals tumbled onto the road. Following this, Mr. Gurman rose to his feet and seemingly engaged the assailant with the firearm. The attacker then purportedly retrieved another gun, which was used to end the lives of the couple.
The family expressed immense pride in Boris and Sofia’s valor and altruism, acknowledging that the duo instinctively and selflessly sought to aid others. They described the couple’s sudden and senseless demise as heartbreaking, highlighting Boris’s reputation as a benevolent retired mechanic and Sofia’s beloved status among her colleagues and community members at Australia Post.

The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of fifteen individuals, including a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor. The victims’ ages ranged from 10 to 87, with 22 others, including two police officers, currently hospitalized, nine of whom are in critical condition.
