Ahmed al-Ahmed, hailed as a hero for his brave act of disarming a shooter at Bondi Beach, has broken his silence.
The 43-year-old courageous bystander sustained five gunshot wounds while thwarting one of the attackers during the incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday. After seizing the weapon, al-Ahmed turned it on the assailant, compelling him to retreat. His swift actions were lauded by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, who mentioned on Facebook that al-Ahmed’s intervention “saved countless lives.” Premier Minns also shared a photo with al-Ahmed on Monday night.
The tragic event at a Hanukkah celebration resulted in the loss of sixteen lives, including a 10-year-old girl and the elder of the two assailants, father Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24. Additionally, 42 individuals were either hospitalized or received medical attention, with 22, including two police officers, still under medical care according to the latest updates.
In an interview with Turkish state broadcaster TRT World from his hospital bed, al-Ahmed expressed his gratitude, saying, “May Allah reward you and grant well-being.” He also requested prayers for his recovery and the alleviation of the current challenges.
Al-Ahmed’s former immigration lawyer, Sam Issa, disclosed that his injuries were more severe than initially reported, with multiple surgeries required due to the five gunshot wounds. Al-Ahmed mentioned experiencing loss of sensation in his arm, indicating a potential nerve injury.
Despite his condition, al-Ahmed expressed willingness to repeat his actions if necessary, although the physical and emotional toll is significant. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited al-Ahmed, commending him as a “true Australian hero,” embodying the best qualities of the nation.
Albanese highlighted al-Ahmed’s humility and bravery in the face of adversity, emphasizing that his actions serve as an inspiration to all Australians. The prime minister also met al-Ahmed’s proud parents, who had traveled from Syria to be by their son’s side during his recovery.
Albanese confirmed that al-Ahmed is scheduled for further surgery on Wednesday to address his injuries. US President Donald Trump also praised al-Ahmed’s bravery during a Christmas reception at The White House, acknowledging his selfless act in confronting the assailant and saving lives.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated for al-Ahmed has raised over AU$2 million, with notable contributions, including a generous donation from US billionaire Bill Ackman.
