Keir Starmer expressed disappointment that a planned five-day pre-Christmas strike by NHS doctors will proceed as scheduled. The Prime Minister criticized the British Medical Association (BMA) union for moving forward with the strike during a severe flu season. Despite efforts by Health Secretary Wes Streeting to address a medical staffing crisis, BMA members rejected the proposed measures.

Resident doctors voted overwhelmingly in favor of continuing with the strike, which is slated to commence on December 17 and conclude on December 22. The decision comes amidst concerns about a surge in flu cases, with hospitals in England experiencing record levels of flu patients for this time of year.

The BMA emphasized that the strike could still be averted if the government presents a viable offer to address the ongoing staffing crisis and prevent proposed pay cuts in 2026. However, Starmer criticized the BMA’s actions as irresponsible, citing a previous pay increase and a potential deal that was not pursued.

Streeting condemned the timing of the Christmas strikes, accusing the BMA of jeopardizing patient safety and showing disregard for NHS staff. He urged resident doctors to reconsider the strike, highlighting the heightened risks associated with striking during a critical period for healthcare services.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the flu season and the impending strikes, officials emphasized the need to focus on mitigating the impact on the health service. The government reiterated its offer to address job competition and increase pay for resident doctors, which was rejected by the BMA due to unmet demands for a significant pay rise.

Despite concerns raised by NHS Providers about the potential harm to patients and the health service, the BMA defended the decision to strike, emphasizing the need for a credible offer to resolve the jobs crisis and avoid pay cuts in the future. The BMA affirmed its commitment to patient safety and urged hospital trusts to ensure adequate staffing during the strikes.

The ongoing dispute underscores the challenges facing the healthcare sector during a period of heightened flu activity and industrial action. Both sides remain at odds over the proposed measures, with implications for patient care and the functioning of the NHS.
