Police in Derby have provided a significant update following an incident that occurred earlier this week. Approximately 200 residences were evacuated as a precautionary measure subsequent to a search warrant being executed at a location on Vulcan Street on Thursday. The Explosive Ordnance Division conducted investigations, allowing residents to return home the following day, as confirmed by Derbyshire Police.

Two individuals, both in their 40s and 50s, were apprehended on suspicion of offenses related to explosives. They have been in police custody since the warrant was executed on Thursday morning, with authorities seeking extensions to their detention period as the investigations progress. However, in the latest update over the weekend, the police disclosed that the two men, who are of Polish nationality, have been granted bail.

Ongoing inquiries are being conducted, as reported by Derbyshire Live. The police reiterated that the investigation remains unchanged in its focus and is not being treated as terrorism-related. There is currently no evidence indicating a broader threat to public safety.

Authorities have confirmed that the incident falls under investigation in accordance with the Explosives Act 1875. All materials have been retrieved from the premises and securely stored, with no risk posed to the public, the police further emphasized.

The evacuation operation involved various agencies, including Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Derby City Council, the Salvation Army, and the Pakistani Community Centre. Displaced residents were offered accommodation in hotels if needed.

The cordon was lifted on Friday evening, permitting residents to return to their homes. Superintendent Becky Webster expressed, “While residents have been allowed back to their homes, we understand that the impact of this incident does not stop there. A team of detectives has been working round the clock, alongside specialist partners, to help understand the materials found.”

Webster clarified, “This is being investigated as offences under the Explosives Act 1875, and there is no information to suggest any intent to harm others or any terrorist-related matters.” The individuals arrested have been released on stringent bail conditions, with ongoing testing of the materials recovered from the location.

She added, “This is a time-consuming process and not one that can be hurried. However, all the materials have been removed from the address, and are safely stored with no risks to the public.”

“I would like to once again thank everyone in the community for their support in recent days, we know that the inconvenience caused, and the concerns raised, are not easy, and we remain committed to ensuring that updates are provided as soon as possible to ensure that the public are kept informed.”
