Jannik Sinner faced an emotional moment at the Australian Open as his opponent, Hugo Gaston, retired mid-match and broke down in tears. Gaston, ranked World No. 93, initially showed promise by earning three break points in the first game against the World No. 2 but appeared to struggle physically thereafter.
During a break, Gaston was seen taking tablets before returning to the court. Sinner went on to win the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-1 as Gaston’s energy waned. When Sinner went up 2-0 in sets, Gaston decided to concede the match. Sinner displayed sportsmanship by consoling his emotional opponent after the match.
In a post-match interview, Sinner mentioned he noticed Gaston was not at his best physically. Former British No. 1 and TNT Sports commentator, Tim Henman, speculated that Gaston may have been unwell, as indicated by gestures towards his stomach before retiring.
Henman also praised Sinner’s exceptional performance, noting that while Gaston had opportunities early in the match, the outcome seemed inevitable given Sinner’s strong play. The match’s conclusion was unexpected but did not significantly impact the final result.
