America’s largest military plane experienced a mid-air emergency over the Pacific Ocean. The Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy, the biggest aircraft in the United States Air Force inventory, was en route to Hawaii when the emergency alert was issued. The plane, which departed from Travis Air Force Base in California, is designed for global cargo transportation, capable of carrying tanks, helicopters, and large pallets.
Following the emergency, the aircraft safely returned to Travis Air Force Base and landed before 11 a.m. local time. The reason for the emergency alert has not been confirmed by the United States Air Force.
Originally introduced during the Vietnam War in the 1960s, the Super Galaxy has undergone significant upgrades over the years, becoming one of the largest military aircraft in the US arsenal. Measuring over 140 feet long and 19 feet wide, the aircraft can accommodate up to five helicopters and is powered by four turbofan engines.
Travis Air Force Base, also known as the ‘Gateway to the Pacific,’ is a key military air terminal handling substantial cargo and passenger traffic.
In a separate incident, a Ryanair flight bound for Tenerife had to return to the UK after declaring a mid-air emergency. The Boeing 737 MAX took off from Birmingham Airport on December 28 and signaled an emergency over Brittany, France, due to air turbulence. The flight, which encountered turbulence during cabin service, descended to 10,000 feet before safely landing back in Birmingham.
Passengers reported injuries resulting from the turbulence, prompting medical assistance upon landing. Ryanair confirmed the incident and stated that the flight resumed its journey to Tenerife later that evening.
