Donald Trump hinted at the idea of renaming a significant maritime passage, proposing to call it the “Strait of Trump.” Speaking at an event in Miami organized by the Saudi Arabia sovereign wealth fund, Trump reassured the audience that the US military is making progress in its ongoing conflict with Iran.
The focal point of the current standoff is the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has been obstructing, leading to disruptions in global trade. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Trump made a lighthearted comment by mentioning a different name for the strait.
In jest, Trump remarked, “They have to open up the Strait of Trump… I mean Hormuz!” He further emphasized, “Excuse me, I’m so sorry, such a terrible mistake. Fake news will say, ‘He accidentally said…’, no, there’s no accidents with me!”
Drawing a parallel, Trump recalled his previous suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, highlighting a similar decision-making process that was quickly implemented.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has established a task force to address the repercussions of the Iran conflict on humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments passing through the vital waterway. The task force, comprising representatives from various UN agencies, will focus on devising technical solutions to ensure the smooth flow of critical aid through the strait, drawing inspiration from past UN initiatives in regions like Gaza and Yemen.
Responding to this development, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, confirmed Iran’s commitment to facilitating the safe passage of essential humanitarian aid and agricultural supplies through the strait.
The initiative has been welcomed as a step towards supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring timely assistance reaches those in need without hindrance.
