Russia has introduced a fearsome new combat robot capable of autonomously loading and firing ammunition. The experimental robot, known as the Kurier ground robotic system, is equipped with a high-speed mortar system and has been recorded undergoing live-fire tests for the first time.
During the trials, the mortar robot was paired with a newly unveiled Bagulnik-82 mortar module, as reported by Russian outlet RG, and there are plans for its potential deployment to Ukraine. A video clip showcases the robot rotating its turret in a snowy environment before launching 82mm mortar rounds at a distant target. Following the firing sequence, an automated arm swiftly reloads the mortar tube without the need for human intervention, completing the process in just about five seconds. This system is designed to operate remotely in combat scenarios.
The existence of the Bagulnik-82 module was not public knowledge until this recent footage surfaced. Analysts believe it may be derived from Russia’s 2B24 82mm light mortar, but the level of automation suggests a new system custom-built for robotic applications, indicating a shift towards robotic warfare with minimal human involvement.
Both Russia and Ukraine have introduced robots for various battlefield missions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine has expanded its robotic fleet significantly over the past few years, utilizing platforms like the THeMIS for resupply and evacuation, as well as armed systems such as the Droid TW 12.7 with a remotely operated machine gun.
In addition to the Kurier robots, Russia has deployed the Omich robotic system, which is utilized for transporting supplies, equipment, and personnel in combat zones.
