Two pest control workers tragically lost their lives after being exposed to a deadly gas at Banham Poultry factory in Norfolk. Neil Moon, 49, and Jonathan “Jon” Collins, 34, were asphyxiated by nitrogen gas in a walkway beside the chicken factory during routine pest control work. The men had unknowingly entered a lethal environment with no prior warning, leading to their untimely deaths.
Both Banham Poultry Limited and Air Products Plc were fined for health and safety violations related to the incident. Air Products faced a fine of £2,475,000 for a serious failure in repair work oversight, while Banham Poultry, which went into administration shortly after the tragedy, received a nominal fine of £900. The court highlighted the significant repercussions of the companies’ negligence on the victims’ families.
Neil Moon, a father of three, had recently married and was expecting a child at the time of his death. His wife, Gillian, described him as a cheerful and uplifting person. Jonathan Collins, also a father of three, was remembered as a friendly and beloved individual by his fiancé Sara, who emphasized the profound impact of his loss on their family.
The fatal incident stemmed from the implementation of a SafeChill system by Air Products at the poultry factory. Issues arose with the system’s nitrogen gas dispersal, prompting multiple temporary modifications that were not effectively managed. Tragically, the two workers entered a confined space where concentrated nitrogen gas had accumulated, leading to their swift demise.
The court proceedings revealed the negligence and lack of proper safety measures by both companies, emphasizing the preventable nature of the tragedy. The families of the victims expressed their ongoing grief and disappointment with the outcome of the sentencing, stressing the importance of upholding duty of care to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
The families urged all responsible parties to prioritize safety and learn from this heartbreaking loss, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to safety standards to avoid similar tragedies in the workplace.
