“Artemis 2 Mission Faces Communication Blackout Behind Moon”

Date:

During the Artemis 2 mission, astronauts are preparing for a communication blackout when their spacecraft loses contact with ground control for 40 minutes. The blackout is scheduled to happen as the astronauts pass behind the Moon at approximately 23:47pm UK time (18:47pm EDT) today, marking the first instance of the crew losing contact with Houston’s mission control since the mission commenced on April 1.

The interruption in communication will occur because the Moon will obstruct radio and laser signals that facilitate continuous communication between the team and Earth. Artemis pilot Victor Glover mentioned that during this downtime, the crew plans to unite in prayer, hoping to reconnect with mission control.

While those on Earth responsible for maintaining spacecraft communication anticipate a brief halt in communication, they acknowledge feeling a bit uneasy. The Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall has been intercepting signals from the Orion capsule and relaying information back to Nasa HQ.

Matt Cosby, the Chief Technology Officer, expressed excitement about tracking a manned spacecraft for the first time, highlighting the importance of continuous communication for sustained lunar presence. The Artemis 2 mission signifies the first human voyage to lunar orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, where astronauts also experienced a communication blackout when moving across the Moon.

Reflecting on past missions, such as Apollo 11, where astronauts faced temporary loss of contact, it is evident that these moments of solitude have been part of space exploration history. The astronauts embrace this silence as a temporary break from constant communication requests from mission control, emphasizing the resilience and adaptability needed for space travel.
