“British Columbia Wildfires: Updates, Evacuees Return Home”

Date:

The most recent updates on the ongoing wildfires in British Columbia include the availability of free N95 respirator masks in select Interior communities to aid those affected by the smoke. The B.C. Wildfire Service anticipates a change in weather over the weekend, potentially bringing rain or additional lightning to the Interior region.

Evacuees from the Clinton area have started returning home after being displaced by the Pear Lake wildfire. Highway 97 near Vernon remains closed due to a nearby wildfire. Moreover, evacuation orders in Summerland and West Kelowna have been downgraded, allowing thousands of residents to return home.

N95 respirator masks are now accessible throughout the Interior to combat wildfire smoke, provided by the Canadian Red Cross on behalf of the federal government. Additionally, the province recommends reducing smoke exposure by using air cleaners and utilizing clean-air spaces in community facilities.

Unstable weather conditions persist, with 120 active wildfires across the province, mostly initiated by lightning strikes. The B.C. Wildfire Service warns of potential thunderstorms in the central Interior. While rain has benefited southeastern B.C., a new evacuation order was issued near Revelstoke.

Returning evacuees are advised to prepare for challenges like fallen trees, intermittent power, and wildlife encounters. Residents are urged to be cautious as wildfires continue to pose risks, and assessments reveal widespread property damage.

Highway 97 has fully reopened in the Cache Creek area after being closed for several days due to the Pear Lake wildfire. However, sections near Vernon and in the Okanagan have faced intermittent closures due to ongoing wildfire threats. Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon area remains closed as well, primarily due to the Brunswick Creek wildfire complex.
