Daniel Dubois has parted ways with trainer Don Charles after his loss to Oleksandr Usyk. Dubois will now be under the guidance of Tony Sims, a former coach of Anthony Joshua. This decision follows Charles’ assistant trainer, Kieran Farrell, also stepping back from working with the former world champion.
Two years ago, Dubois started training with Charles after a period with Shane McGuigan, son of boxing icon Barry McGuigan. Prior to that, Dubois was under the mentorship of Mark Tibbs.
Charles was in Dubois’ corner for his notable victories against Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua, which led to Dubois being crowned world champion after defeating Hrgovic when Usyk relinquished his IBF belt.
The first encounter between Dubois and Usyk was in 2023, where Usyk defeated Dubois in the ninth round. Two years later, Usyk achieved a more decisive victory by knocking out Dubois in the fifth round. Dubois is not expected to return to the ring this year as he plans his comeback.
Following his loss to Usyk, reports surfaced that Dubois’ father hosted a gathering at their home just hours before the fight, with approximately 70 attendees. Charles clarified that it was not a party but a gathering, emphasizing the positive impact such gatherings had on Dubois’ energy levels in previous fights, including the victory against Anthony Joshua.
Charles defended the pre-fight gathering, explaining its significance in boosting Dubois’ performance. Despite the criticisms, Charles stood by the decision, highlighting the success it had brought in the past.
