The Ontario government has revealed plans to potentially introduce more casinos to the Niagara Region by terminating current exclusivity agreements. Premier Doug Ford unveiled the Destination Niagara initiative in December, aiming to attract a larger number of visitors to the area by implementing new casinos, a theme park, airport expansion, and other developments.
The interim minister of tourism, culture, and gaming in Ontario announced an agreement between the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. and MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc. to permit additional casino operators. MGE will relinquish its exclusive rights while maintaining operations at Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara. Later this year, OLG is expected to initiate a procurement process to identify prospective new casino operators.
Amidst discussions surrounding Ford’s Destination Niagara project, Wayne Gates, a member of the provincial parliament for Niagara Falls, highlighted local opposition to the potential installation of a second ferris wheel near the falls. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati expressed skepticism about the idea, labeling it a “dead issue” and indicating lack of support for a Ferris wheel in Queen Victoria Park.
