Renowned as the voice behind Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher has passed away at the age of 79. The announcement of his death came on Thursday, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned 33 uninterrupted seasons with the Flames.
Maher, who began his tenure as the team’s play-by-play announcer for radio broadcasts in 1980, left an indelible mark on Calgary fans with his iconic catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His passion for his craft shone through as he covered memorable moments like the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004.
Having retired after the 2013-14 NHL season, Maher’s legacy transcends his broadcasting achievements. The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging his integral role in the Flames community.
Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before relocating to Calgary to become the official voice of the Flames when the team moved from Atlanta in 1980. Reflecting on his career in a memoir titled “If These Walls Could Talk — Stories from the Calgary Flames’ Ice, Locker Room, and Press Box,” Maher described his move to Calgary as a pivotal moment in his life.
Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher at Saddledome, lamented the loss of a master storyteller dedicated to recounting the Flames’ history. Kerr praised Maher’s commitment to delivering authentic and journalistic-based broadcasts, emphasizing his unmatched broadcasting skills.
Maher’s illustrious career extended beyond the Flames, including coverage of six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the memorable 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. His exceptional contributions to NHL broadcasting earned him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
In a fitting tribute, the Scotiabank Saddledome’s broadcast booth was named after Maher following his retirement in 2014. Additionally, an annual award in Calgary, bearing his name, honors Flames players who exemplify sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
