Shocking pictures have been captured of Storm Amy wreaking havoc across the United Kingdom, causing buildings to collapse, trees to fall, and power outages. The severe weather conditions have led to the evacuation of popular seaside destinations and tourist spots like Brighton and Bournemouth, resulting in a gloomy aftermath with overcast skies. Despite the chaos, some individuals took advantage of the storm, with reports of people heading towards a diving tower in Ireland.
In other areas, people were spotted braving the wet and windy weather in Leeds for a night out, while commuters in London continued to use their bicycles despite the harsh conditions. The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for widespread wind across the UK, with the north of Scotland facing an amber warning for potentially “damaging” winds exceeding 90mph in certain regions.
Scotland has experienced significant power outages, particularly in the Highlands, which have been hit hardest by the inclement weather. Strong winds reaching up to 100mph have been reported in both Scotland and Northern Ireland. Efforts are underway by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to restore power to approximately 62,000 affected customers. Although some progress has been made, with power being reinstated for 16,500 customers by Saturday morning, thousands remain without electricity due to the extreme wind speeds associated with Storm Amy.
Due to the severe wind conditions from the storm, all eight of London’s royal parks, including Hyde Park and Richmond Park, will remain closed on Saturday. The closures extend to park roads, cycle paths, cafes, sports facilities, and other park amenities. Additionally, the Serpentine lido, boating lake, and royal parks shop will also be closed.
Various dramatic scenes have been witnessed across the impacted regions, including flooding in North Yorkshire, daring swimmers at the Blackrock diving tower in Galway, Ireland, and a Buzz Lightyear toy navigating through floodwaters in North Yorkshire. Additionally, a vehicle was severely damaged after a building collapsed onto it in Glasgow, monstrous waves were observed at Brighton beach, a fallen tree obstructed a street in Manchester, and individuals sought refuge from the rain in Liverpool city center.
