Actor Hannah Einbinder has taken to social media to redirect focus to the ongoing situation in Gaza rather than the attention surrounding her recent arrest at a protest outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s UN speech. In an Instagram post, Einbinder emphasized the urgent need to address the conflict in Palestine and Southern Lebanon, criticizing both Israel’s actions and the U.S.’s support for the country.
Einbinder, along with Susan Sarandon and other celebrities, was among more than 100 individuals detained during a demonstration in New York City as Netanyahu delivered his speech at the UN General Assembly. The protest, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, aimed to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for an end to military funding to Israel.
The activist group reported over 100 arrests during the protest, highlighting the demand to halt the alleged genocide and military aid to Israel. Einbinder’s fellow actor, Elliot Page, also echoed these sentiments by sharing the group’s statement on social media.
Israel’s denial of allegations regarding its actions in Gaza as genocide was reiterated by Netanyahu during his speech, where he defended the country’s military operations against Hamas and emphasized efforts to minimize civilian casualties and provide humanitarian aid.
The protest also witnessed the walkout of several delegates during Netanyahu’s address, reflecting growing international criticism of Israel’s policies. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, denied a visa to attend in person, addressed the assembly through a pre-recorded message, condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
As discussions on Israel’s conduct continue to intensify, the U.S. remains a key ally, planning a significant arms deal worth $2.8 billion with Israel. Amidst concerns over potential ethnic cleansing, Israeli officials have raised the prospect of relocating millions of Palestinians from Gaza, awaiting U.S. approval for such actions.
