Algoma Steel’s electric arc furnace (EAF) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is currently out of operation following a power outage. The company has indicated that the furnace was automatically shut down upon detecting an anomaly, which is believed to be related to a turbine issue at the Lake Superior Generating Station.
In an email to CBC News, Algoma Steel mentioned that repair work is in progress and they have decided to advance a maintenance outage originally scheduled for later in the quarter. By addressing both issues simultaneously, the company aims to minimize overall downtime throughout the year and enhance their restart position.
Algoma Steel anticipates that the outage could extend up to 21 days. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), responsible for managing Ontario’s power system, is collaborating with the company to explore potential temporary alternative power solutions in response to the unexpected loss of the on-site generator.
Despite the furnace outage, Algoma Steel reassures that its finishing operations will proceed as usual, and they do not foresee any disruptions to customer orders.
