Two individuals lost their lives instantly in the tragic accident involving the SUV that Anthony Joshua was traveling in, as reported by eyewitnesses. The British boxer was rushed to a hospital in Nigeria following the incident, while his security team and bystanders swiftly responded to the crash near Makun on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun state.
The collision occurred when Joshua’s vehicle, accompanied by security personnel, swerved and collided with a stationary truck after a tire burst, leading to a loss of control. Local authorities, including the Ogun state traffic compliance and enforcement agency, are investigating the crash involving Joshua.
According to Adeniyi Orojo, an eyewitness interviewed by Punch newspaper, the accident involved a two-vehicle convoy comprising a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver with another passenger beside him, resulting in a total of four occupants in the crashed Lexus. Tragically, the passenger next to the driver and the individual next to Joshua lost their lives at the scene.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, confirmed that Joshua was safe and en route to the hospital following the crash. The incident occurred while Joshua was visiting Nigeria, his parents’ homeland, where he had recently defeated Jake Paul in a boxing match. Joshua, who won an Olympic gold medal for the United Kingdom, often shows his connection to Nigeria by displaying the country’s flag.
After his recent victory over Jake Paul, Joshua hinted at a significant year ahead in 2026 and reignited his rivalry with Tyson Fury in post-fight remarks. In a social media post, Joshua expressed gratitude to his supporters and teased upcoming developments in the New Year.
