Camryn Rogers from Canada and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw events, respectively, at the recent Diamond League competition in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, securing the top spot. She boasts titles from the Olympics, world championships, and Commonwealth Games.
In the women’s event, American DeAnna Price took second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third with 71.95 meters. On the men’s side, Ethan Katzberg, representing Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the victory with an impressive throw of 82.92 meters, maintaining his dominance with Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles.
Germany’s Merlin Hummel secured second place with a throw of 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with 79.44 meters. The men’s 100m final saw Canada’s Andre De Grasse finish sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds, as Jamaica’s Oblique Seville claimed victory in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds. American Kenny Bednarek took second place with a season-best time of 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman of the United States finished third in 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m event featured an exciting competition, with American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden setting a season-best time of 10.78 seconds to win. Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred secured second place in a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while American Sha’Carri Richardson finished third with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprising turn of events, American Ethan Strand claimed victory in the men’s 1,500m race with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech finished second in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third with a time of 3:31.16. The upcoming Diamond League meeting is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, leading up to the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11-13 in Budapest.
Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw. However, Rogers will not participate despite holding similar titles in women’s hammer throw since the event is not part of the championship program.
