The Chief of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, Kele Antoine, expressed the significant impact of a recent shooting incident in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., which resulted in one person being injured. Antoine emphasized the tight-knit nature of the small community where everyone is interconnected, stressing that events affecting one family resonate throughout the entire community.
Encouraging community members with any relevant information to step forward, Antoine highlighted the collaborative effort needed beyond law enforcement alone. RCMP responded to the incident after receiving reports of a man being shot in a residence backyard around 1:40 a.m. The injured individual was promptly attended to at the local health center before being transferred to Yellowknife for further medical care.
Authorities disclosed that the shooting seemed targeted, prompting an ongoing investigation in coordination with Yellowknife RCMP and other agencies. Reassuring the public, police stated there is no immediate threat to community safety. While Antoine suggested a possible drug-related motive for the shooting, this remains unconfirmed by RCMP.
Antoine underlined the necessity for sustained funding and adequate resources for local RCMP to effectively combat violence, particularly within the drug trade. He emphasized the importance of a continuous effort rather than short-term measures following incidents, emphasizing the need to address the root causes and prevent future violence proactively.
