Residents of Colchester County are expressing concerns about police communication after weeks of speculation surrounding the discovery of human remains near Debert, Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia RCMP confirmed the discovery of a man’s remains on July 22 via a press release issued on Thursday.
Community members have been discussing the discovery of remains since late July, with online rumors suggesting that four bodies were found in the area. Despite initial denials by the police regarding these rumors, it was later revealed that the remains of one person were indeed found.
In response to inquiries from CBC News, the RCMP stated that they provided details of the discovery and ongoing police activities at an appropriate time to support the investigation process. The RCMP emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of the investigation and ensuring proper collection and assessment of evidence.
Several residents reported witnessing police conducting searches in a wooded area accessible via a service road off Highway 4 near Debert. The specific location provided by the RCMP was a “wooded area in the vicinity of Debert.”
Local resident Abby Clusiaux, who frequents the back roads near the search area, expressed disappointment at the lack of communication surrounding the incident. The community, still reeling from the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting in Portapique, about 25 kilometers from Debert, remains concerned about the recent discovery.
The RCMP assured the public that there is no immediate risk associated with the human remains but indicated that suspicions of criminality are tied to the man’s death. The provincial medical examiner is collaborating with law enforcement to determine the man’s identity and the circumstances of his death.
Colchester North MLA Tom Taggart voiced confidence in the RCMP’s ongoing investigation, acknowledging past communication challenges during the Portapique incident. An on-camera interview request with the Colchester District RCMP was declined, citing the early stage of the investigation as a reason for withholding further details.
