Disney’s classic ’90s cartoon, Darkwing Duck, is set to make a comeback with a new series approved by Disney+. After 35 years since the original premiere, the show will introduce a fresh storyline. The new premise involves Darkwing Duck finding himself in an alternate world where his superhero legacy is unknown. A rebellious teen named Duckie, aware of his heroic past, persuades the ego-driven vigilante to return to crime-fighting.
The revival was developed in collaboration with the original series creator, Tad Stones, and will feature familiar characters from the franchise. Mark Hamill will lend his voice to Drake Mallard, alias Darkwing Duck, the fearless protector of St. Canard.
The announcement of the reboot on Instagram sparked mixed reactions from fans, particularly regarding the replacement of the original voice actor, Jim Cummings. While some fans expressed disappointment, others praised Mark Hamill’s voice acting skills.
The lead roles in the reboot will include Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, Darkwing’s scatterbrained sidekick, Lizzy Caplan as his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar Hernandez as the new character Duckie.
Darkwing Duck originally aired in 1991 on the Disney Channel and ran for 91 episodes, gaining popularity until around 1997. The crime-fighting duck also made appearances in Nintendo NES and Game Boy video games. Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, known for its recent work on The Muppet Show, will produce the new Darkwing Duck series.
In a statement, the Point Grey team referenced Darkwing Duck’s famous catchphrase, stating, “Disney said, ‘Let’s get dangerous,’ and we said, ‘Hell yeah.'”
