“Delay in Recovery: Tiny Species Absent in Restored Ecosystems”

A regenerated forest can appear tall, dense, and verdant. Reclaimed wetlands can be alive with buzzing insects and fluttering birds. Yet, upon closer inspection, scientists have observed that some of the tiniest inhabitants, such as specific mosses, lichens, algae, and fungi, are often absent.

Restoring ecosystems like forests and wetlands can aid in the conservation of declining animal and plant species, facilitating their recovery. However, recent studies have revealed that not all species return at the same pace. Some of the smallest and least conspicuous inhabitants may remain scarce or missing for extended periods, potentially impacting other species.

Ellen Macdonald, a botanist from the University of Alberta, has dedicated her research to forests, particularly focusing on the minute flowers, mosses, liverworts, and lichens that thrive in their ecosystem. Macdonald emphasized the vast diversity of these smaller species compared to tree species.

To the casual observer, a reforested area decades after logging may resemble an untouched forest, brimming with towering trees, birds, and insects. However, Macdonald noted a subtle discrepancy while traversing regenerated coniferous boreal forests, indicating something amiss that might not be readily discernible without data collection.

Macdonald conducted a comprehensive study, amalgamating her findings with global data to explore the timeline for plant and animal recolonization in boreal forests following clearcutting. The research, recently featured in the journal Nature Sustainability, disclosed that birch and aspen forests and their inhabitants showed signs of recovery within 25 years, whereas coniferous forests took significantly longer. In conifer forests, understory plants, particularly lichens, mosses, and liverworts, took 85 years or more to reappear, with some species failing to recover even after a century.

The phenomenon of delayed recovery is not exclusive to boreal forests. Scientists investigating restored habitats like wetlands have also noted the persistence of absent less-visible species in seemingly healthy environments.

Viktoria Wagner, an associate professor at the University of Alberta, described this decline as a “silent form of loss,” where species gradually vanish from their previous habitats, diminishing the overall species richness at individual sites. Wagner identified this as “dark diversity,” noting similar trends among plants globally.

The absence of certain species can impede ecosystem recovery and have unseen repercussions. Algae, despite their small size, play a significant role in global photosynthesis, contributing to oxygen availability and food sources. Declining diversity can trigger adverse effects on other species within the ecosystem.

Understanding these ecological patterns could aid landscape managers in adopting strategies that preserve a greater number of species. Macdonald suggested that selective or partial harvesting might be more beneficial for conifer forests, based on research findings.

The preservation of algae habitats worldwide, along with their associated species, is a pressing concern. Algae, often inconspicuous to the untrained eye, are crucial components of various ecosystems. Efforts to collect and preserve algae strains aim to safeguard their genetic diversity and ensure their survival.

To counteract the ongoing loss of species diversity, active interventions are necessary to maintain and restore habitats across landscapes, rather than merely protecting isolated areas. This ongoing process of loss underscores the importance of proactive measures to sustain biodiversity.
