Marcus Ericsson clinched victory at the debut Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham with two crucial passes that defined the race.
The first pass involved a bump between Ericsson and teammate Will Power as Ericsson made a late move during Sunday’s race. The second pass came with only four laps remaining around the Markham street course, where Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean to secure his fifth IndyCar career win.
Reflecting on his victory, Ericsson attributed it to the team’s exceptional pace, emphasizing their strategic gameplay and precise execution when it mattered most.
Following Ericsson’s triumph, Grosjean finished second, achieving his first top-five finish of the season, while Power claimed the third spot and current driver rankings leader Alex Palou settled for fourth place.
Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second position in the driver rankings, are all part of the Andretti Global team.
During the race, Kirkwood’s exit in the 53rd lap prompted the Andretti Global team to shift focus towards preventing Palou from gaining more points to secure his fifth IndyCar title.
Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the team’s strategic approach, emphasizing the importance of challenging Palou to maintain Kirkwood’s contention in the championship.
However, a miscommunication led to a brief incident where Power inadvertently impeded Ericsson’s progress while trying to defend against Palou.
Despite the setback, Palou earned 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood by 133 points in the standings.
Grosjean, who had been defending against Palou for a significant portion of the race, ultimately succumbed to Ericsson’s pressure due to fuel constraints and tire wear.
The race witnessed several challenges and unexpected turns, with Foster, the fastest car in practice and qualifying, encountering a crash early on as predicted.
Markham, hosting its first IndyCar race after relocating from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, showcased a thrilling event despite initial setup challenges, drawing praise from drivers and spectators alike.
Ericsson expressed optimism for the future of the event, anticipating smoother operations in the upcoming editions on the newly established track.
