Balancing screen time with quality family moments can be a daily challenge for many families. With children using devices for various purposes like learning, socializing, gaming, and streaming, determining a reasonable amount of screen time can be tricky.
In an effort to promote online safety discussions within families, The Family Chat campaign, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, is ongoing throughout 2026. Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging in conversations with parents and children to address challenges related to screen time and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety resources can be beneficial.
One of the resources offered is a downloadable family pledge where families can establish commitments regarding healthy screen time practices and online safety measures. Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regular reviews to ensure that screen time guidelines remain appropriate for children’s ages and interests.
For the Karley family, consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a crucial role in staying connected, managing schoolwork, and organizing their busy schedules. To approach the topic of screen time in a positive manner, they participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, engaging in activities that highlighted both online and offline pursuits.
Following the challenges, the Karleys filled out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, committing to maintaining a balanced approach to digital usage and privacy. They plan to utilize Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for expert guidance and have already implemented a phones-down rule at 9.30pm to prioritize family bonding activities.
It is essential to be cautious of certain aspects in online content, such as sensational headlines, suspicious websites, and posts aiming to evoke strong emotions. Encouraging children to verify social media accounts and engaging in fact-checking activities together can help promote online safety awareness within the family.
