A motorist has been taken into custody after a devastating accident on the M23 that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman and left a 23-year-old man with severe injuries.
The crash, involving a single vehicle, took place on the northbound section of the M23 between junction 10 for Crawley and junction nine for Gatwick Airport in West Sussex, just before 5 am on Thursday. According to Sussex Police, the car veered off the main road and struck the central reservation and a tree.
Authorities confirmed that a 23-year-old woman from London, a passenger in the vehicle, was declared dead at the scene, with her family notified. Another 23-year-old man from London, also a passenger, is receiving medical care for serious injuries.
The driver, a 21-year-old man from London, has been apprehended on suspicion of causing death and serious injury through dangerous driving. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Inspector Matt Wightwick from Sussex Police expressed sorrow over the incident and emphasized ongoing efforts to uncover the full details of the tragedy. The closure of the northbound carriageway, impacting travelers, especially those heading to the airport, will persist for investigative and vehicle recovery purposes.
Authorities are seeking witnesses and encouraging individuals with dashcam footage to contact them via email. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene, urging drivers to avoid the area and suggesting alternative routes for those heading to Gatwick Airport.
Although the northbound carriageway between junctions 10 and nine was temporarily closed, it has since reopened with a diversion in place. National Highways personnel are assisting with traffic management in the area.
