Geoff Burrow, the father of former rugby league star Rob Burrow, has sadly passed away, as confirmed recently. Geoff played a significant role in the remarkable awareness and fundraising efforts that began after Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

The Leeds Rhinos expressed their sorrow in a statement, informing that Geoff Burrow, a native of Leeds, passed away on Monday, 30th March, following a period of poor health. They highlighted Geoff’s unwavering dedication to raising awareness for motor neurone disease after Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019, a commitment he continued even after Rob’s passing in June 2024.

Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff was instrumental in introducing Rob to rugby at Headingley, sparking his passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff advocated for marginalized voices. The club extended its deepest sympathies to Geoff’s wife Irene and the entire Burrow family, requesting privacy for them during this difficult time.

Rob Burrow, a Leeds legend, was diagnosed with MND in late 2019 and tragically passed away in June 2024. He tirelessly campaigned alongside his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who undertook various physical challenges to raise funds. Together, they established the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds, with construction commencing shortly after Rob’s death and the center opening in November 2025.

Geoff expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the fundraising efforts, emphasizing the support for MND patients, families, and healthcare staff. He played a crucial role in caring for Rob and his children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing, Geoff shared their final moments in the hospital, cherishing Rob’s strength and positivity.

Messages of love and support poured in from various rugby clubs, including Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens, expressing condolences and solidarity with the Burrow family during this challenging period.
