German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged that Germany will respond to any acts of aggression and attacks by Russia. In a recent interview on ZDF television, Merz hailed the diplomatic efforts in Berlin to resolve the conflict in Ukraine as a significant achievement. He highlighted the progress made, particularly in discussions with the US about providing security guarantees for Ukraine post-ceasefire, including a potential Article 5-like security commitment.

During his appearance on the show “What now, Mr. Merz?”, the German leader emphasized the importance of NATO’s Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all, requiring collective defense measures. Merz commended the US for its commitment to protect Ukraine as if it were NATO territory, marking a notable shift in US policy.

Merz proposed the establishment of a demilitarized zone between conflicting parties and warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Germany would retaliate against any Russian aggression and attacks. Despite Putin’s objections to foreign troop presence in Ukraine, Merz stressed that Russia must agree to certain conditions to end the long-standing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his country’s stance against conceding territory to Russia, emphasizing their legal, constitutional, and moral rights to defend their sovereignty. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about Russia’s military buildup near Europe’s borders, with tensions escalating as Putin reportedly maneuvers troops in Belarus, hinting at broader military ambitions.

Reports indicate that over 400,000 new recruits have joined the Russian army this year, surpassing targets set by the president. Analysts have noted intense winter training of troops across Russia, with particular focus on the sizeable Russian army presence in Belarus. European leaders are urged to prepare for potential conflicts ahead, with emphasis on alerting the public while ensuring defense capabilities and caution in the face of escalating tensions.
