Police apprehended a suspected gunman following a deadly incident that claimed two lives and left numerous individuals injured at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA. The violent act unfolded in a classroom just after 4 pm on Saturday, prompting a subsequent 10-hour manhunt after the perpetrator fled on foot. Law enforcement authorities shared a brief video clip of a person of interest, garbed in all black, walking near the university premises; however, it is uncertain if this individual is the one in custody.
A preliminary statement issued by the university confirmed the demise of two individuals and reported that eight others had been hospitalized. It conveyed, “We regret to inform that two individuals have succumbed to injuries in the active shooting incident at the Barus & Holley engineering building. Eight additional victims are in critical but stable condition at the hospital. A shelter-in-place directive remains in effect, and the assailant(s) have not been apprehended yet. Authorities are actively engaged in the area.”
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley disclosed that the building where the shooting transpired was hosting exams at the time of the tragic event. The Barus and Holley building, which houses engineering and physics classes and labs on the eastern section of the campus, was conducting two exams during the incident.
A large-scale search ensued, with over 400 law enforcement officers combing the streets of Providence throughout the night. Various local, state, and federal agencies collaborated to support the investigation, including fire departments, FBI agents, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with neighboring communities in Rhode Island, all rallying to safeguard the Providence populace.
Mayor Smiley provided an update on the injured, indicating that seven are in stable condition, one is critical, and one has been discharged from the hospital.
