Lewis Hamilton expressed surprise at crashing out of the race, describing it as an unusual occurrence for him. The Ferrari driver lost control of his car during the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort track, attributing the incident to a loss of grip on a painted section off the circuit following rain.
While speaking to Sky Sports during the ongoing race, Hamilton refrained from definitively stating the cause of the crash, mentioning that the rear of his car snapped out as he navigated the banked corner. Despite the crash, Hamilton was content with his car’s performance leading up to that point, having improved from his previous 12th place finish in Budapest.
The timing of Hamilton’s crash proved untimely for his teammate Charles Leclerc, who had just made a pit stop for fresh tires when the incident occurred. This allowed others to change tires efficiently under the safety car, with George Russell in the Mercedes overtaking Leclerc. Subsequently, an intense battle ensued between them, culminating in Leclerc reclaiming fifth place from Russell.
However, Russell raised concerns about Leclerc’s corner-cutting move during the duel, prompting an investigation by the race stewards post-event. If Leclerc receives a penalty, it will be enforced at the next race in Monza. Notably, Leclerc also failed to finish the race after being taken out by Kimi Antonelli.
The race also saw a rookie error from a Mercedes driver, who attempted an ambitious inside maneuver on Leclerc at turn three, resulting in a collision that damaged both cars. Leclerc’s Ferrari sustained significant damage, forcing him out of the race as well.
