Renowned singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, after more than sixty years since leaving Canada, has completed the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, citing her motivation as the desire to participate in the electoral process.
Making the announcement on social media platforms such as Instagram and X, Mitchell shared a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony. In the images, she can be seen smiling, donning a red beret and sunglasses, holding an American flag attached to her cardigan. The accompanying video captured the moment she was applauded while moving forward during the ceremony.
In a subsequent social media update, Mitchell elaborated on her decision, emphasizing her pride in achieving American citizenship while affirming her continued allegiance to Canada. She clarified that she retained her Canadian citizenship and drew a parallel with fellow musician Neil Young, humorously referring to herself as a “proud Canerican.”
Having been born as Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alta., in 1943, Mitchell’s journey led her to the U.S. in the mid-1960s due to her marriage to American musician Chuck Mitchell. She resided in several U.S. cities before settling in California, where she became a prominent figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Despite now residing in Santa Barbara, California, she maintains a second home in British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.
Acknowledged for her iconic songs such as “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” as well as the critically acclaimed 1971 album “Blue,” Mitchell’s musical career has spanned decades, evolving from a folk singer in Toronto to one of the most influential songwriters globally. Her extensive discography includes 19 studio albums and numerous awards, including 11 Grammys, five Juno Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The news of Mitchell’s U.S. citizenship has generated varied reactions on social media, with some celebrating the milestone while others expressing skepticism, particularly regarding the timing of the announcement amidst strained U.S.-Canada relations and Mitchell’s previous criticisms of former President Donald Trump. However, Mitchell’s resilience and artistic contributions continue to captivate fans and industry insiders alike, with a biopic reportedly in development, featuring acclaimed director Cameron Crowe and renowned actress Meryl Streep.
