Innocent Man Brutalized by Police Receives Compensation

Date:

An innocent man who underwent urgent eye surgery after his arrest and alleged mistreatment by police has received a substantial monetary compensation. Anthony Giblin, aged 59, sustained a fractured eye socket and was at risk of losing vision in his right eye due to a physical altercation following his apprehension. Accusations included being forcefully pushed onto a cell bed, stripped of his clothing, and left unattended while bleeding for a prolonged period before receiving help.

The incident occurred in July 2021 when Anthony was taken into custody at Swinton police station in Greater Manchester on suspicion of violating a court order. He was part of a group of individuals who provided testimony to the independent Baird Inquiry, which primarily focused on the treatment of individuals detained by Greater Manchester Police (GMP). The inquiry found instances of illegal arrests, improper strip searches, and instances of humiliation within police custody.

GMP has reached an out-of-court settlement with Anthony in response to his civil lawsuit, awarding the sales executive an undisclosed five-figure sum. Despite undergoing emergency surgery to address the swelling behind his eye, Anthony continues to experience permanent numbness and a slight but lasting decline in eyesight. The psychological impact of the traumatic event has also left lasting scars on him.

Anthony expressed his distress, stating, “I was an innocent man subjected to brutality instead of being treated with respect during a distressing ordeal.” Legal representatives at Broudie Jackson Canter argued that the officers’ actions were part of a broader pattern of misconduct highlighted in the Baird Inquiry report, categorizing it as a severe aggravating factor in the case.

Following the incident, Anthony was taken to Salford Royal Hospital, where a CT scan confirmed the severity of his injuries. He underwent surgery to relieve pressure behind his eye, preventing potential blindness. Anthony emphasized the emotional turmoil he experienced during and after the incident, highlighting the profound impact on his life and mental well-being.

Lauren Halliday, a civil liberties lawyer at Broudie Jackson Canter, emphasized the long-lasting psychological repercussions of the event, noting the abuse of power that led to severe consequences for the vulnerable client. The importance of police accountability in upholding the law and protecting individuals from harm was underscored, emphasizing the need for responsible and lawful conduct during arrests and detentions.

A GMP spokesperson acknowledged the settlement of the claim on a without prejudice basis, indicating a resolution to the legal matter.
