Iran has initiated a series of cyber assaults on the US shortly after President Donald Trump threatened to obliterate the country’s civilization. The timing coincides with the impending expiration of the US president’s ultimatum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has reported that hackers linked to Iran are currently engaging in exploitative actions on critical systems within the US. These hackers, identified as sophisticated “advanced persistent threat” groups, are targeting internet-connected industrial systems crucial for essential services, such as factories and energy systems.

The attackers are reportedly exploiting devices like programmable controllers, which are vital for operating infrastructure, leading to disruptions and financial losses. The manipulation of data and control displays by the hackers is causing interference with the normal functioning of these systems, raising concerns about potential impacts on crucial services. US organizations are being advised to assess their networks to minimize the risk of compromise.

Previously, the agency had highlighted similar activities by CyberAv3ngers, a group associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Cyber Electronic Command. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency emphasized the urgent need for US organizations to review the tactics and indicators of compromise presented in their advisory to safeguard against network breaches.

This cyber attack follows President Trump’s warning that failure by Iran to comply with his demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could result in catastrophic consequences. The threat has triggered calls for Trump’s immediate removal from office, with former White House director Anthony Scaramucci urging swift action due to the president’s rhetoric on potential nuclear strikes.

President Trump has set a deadline of 8 pm ET today (1 am Wednesday UK time) for the Iranian regime to comply with his directive regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
