Iran’s foreign minister has dismissed recent threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to initiate the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. In a post on a social media platform, Abbas Araghchi criticized Trump’s economic approach as a diversion from America’s own financial challenges, citing high debt and escalating interest costs. Araghchi emphasized that persisting with failed policies would lead to defeat and strain relations with Iranians, asserting that U.S. economic pressure poses a threat to the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.
Trump’s declaration of forthcoming “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran followed the failure to achieve a lasting resolution to the enduring conflict. In a separate social media post, Trump warned countries of severe economic repercussions if they support Iran in any way, labeling the impending actions as an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” and urging allies to stand with the United States to counter the Iranian threat without specifying targeted nations or detailed strategies.
China, which purchases over 80% of Iran’s exported oil, could face retaliation if the U.S. escalates economic hostilities, according to data from 2025. Chinese officials responded to Trump’s economic threats by emphasizing the ineffectiveness of sanctions and pressure tactics, advocating for a political and diplomatic approach to address the situation.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that focusing on economic measures could reduce the necessity for significant military operations against Tehran, causing oil prices to surge to their highest level in over three weeks in response to the U.S. ultimatums aimed at ending the protracted conflict. Amid escalating tensions, experts like Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, highlighted the risks of Trump’s aggressive stance, cautioning that Iran possesses the capacity to retaliate against the U.S. and its allies economically.
Iran has endured extensive economic sanctions for years, with the Trump administration imposing additional restrictions since the onset of the conflict in February. The failure to secure a sustainable peace agreement has resulted in numerous casualties, with negotiations ending fruitlessly as the 60-day period to find a resolution expired. Trump hinted at a possible resumption of talks in the future, leaving the situation unresolved.
