Members of a new left-wing initiative led by Jeremy Corbyn have decided to officially name their party “Your Party” following a vote at their inaugural conference in Liverpool. The decision, made amidst internal tensions, also involved considering other name options such as “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many.”
Announcing the outcome, Mr. Corbyn declared, “Your Party is the name of Your Party.” The members of this progressive movement opted for a committee of “ordinary members” to steer the party, rejecting the traditional single leadership model, with 51.6% supporting the collective leadership approach over 48.4% in favor of a single leader system. Consequently, neither Corbyn nor former Labour MP Zarah Sultana are eligible to contest the leadership position.
Sultana, who abstained from the conference’s first day due to disputes over expulsions, hailed the decision as “exciting,” emphasizing her longstanding advocacy for enhanced member democracy. She expressed enthusiasm for the party’s ethos of collective leadership, highlighting the party’s commitment to a new socialist vision rooted in mass mobilization and democratic principles.
A spokesperson for Your Party emphasized the significance of the vote, underscoring the party’s commitment to grassroots democracy and accountability as a departure from the conventional top-down political structures prevalent in Westminster. The aim is to create a member-driven party that prioritizes community engagement and rejects the influence of corporate and elite interests.
